In 1862, leading London anaesthetist Joseph Clover developed the first apparatus to provide chloroform in controlled concentrations. Clover devised a "portable regulating ether-inhaler" in 1877. He administered chloroform or ether anaesthesia to many thousands of patients - from which only one direct fatality is known.
