The anaesthetic properties of chloroform vapour in non-human animals were described in early 1847 by Frenchman Marie Jeanne-Pierre Flourens, the French physiologist who first described the functions of the major regions of the vertebrate brain. Flourens also described the anaesthetic properties of ethyl chloride.
