Friedrich Hoffmann

Friedrich Hoffmann was a German physician, professor of medicine, and author of Dissertation de Potentia Diaboli, a treatise on witchcraft. Dr Hoffmann introduced ether into medicine under the brand name Anodyne. "Hoffmann's anodyne" or compound spirit of ether also contained ethyl alcohol. It was used to treat intestinal cramps, earache, toothache, kidney stones, gallstones, painful menstruation and much else besides.
