In common with Professor James Simpson, Rabbi Abraham de Sola asked his audience to believe that Genesis chapter 3, verse 16 did not imply that childbirth had to be a painful process. This notion rested on a mistranslation. Properly interpreted, Rabbi de Sola explained, the Bible said that women were destined to bring forth children with toil or labour, not pain.
