Friedrich Hoffmann

Dr Hoffmann was a German physician and professor of medicine who introduced ether into medicine under the brand name Anodyne. "Hoffmann's anodyne" or compound spirit of ether also contained ethyl alcohol. It was used to treat intestinal cramps, earache, toothache, kidney stones, gallstones, painful menstruation and much else besides.
