Between the years 1803 and 1805, young German apothecary Friedrich Wilhelm Sertürner isolated the morphine crystals contained in dried opium poppy resin. Its isolation allowed physicians to prescribe painkillers in regulated dosages. Morphine is not an anaesthetic, however, unless administered in heroic dosages that run the risk of killing a patient through respiratory depression.
