Thomas Chalmers, Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland, did not view scientific medicine as a challenge to his religious beliefs. Shortly before his death, Rev. Chalmers endorsed anaesthesia. He told Professor James Miller, a surgeon who was a colleague, friend and neighbour of chloroform pioneer Professor James Simpson, that opponents of anaesthesia were "small theologians" who should be ignored.
